Composition
Each ml oral solution contains Itraconazole USP 10 mg.
Pharmacology
Itraconazole, an orally active triazole antifungal agent, has broad spectrum activity in
fungal infections. It selectively binds with fungal cytochrome p-450 iso-enzymes
which inhibits the synthesis of ergosterol and affects membrane bound enzyme
function and membrane permeability. This effect is irreversible and causes structural
degeneration of the fungal organism.
Indication
Poultry: Aspergillosis, Candidiasis/ Thrush/ Crop Mycosis/ Sour Crop etc.
Cattle: Dermatophytosis, Candidiasis, Mycotic mastitis etc.
Dog: Dermatophytosis, Candidiasis, Malassezia, Cryptococcosis, Histoplasmosis,
Blastomycosis, Leishmaniasis, Trypanosomiasis etc.
Cat: Dermatophytosis, Cryptococcosis, Histoplasmosis, Blastomycosis,
coccidiomycosis etc.
Dosage & Administration
Poultry: 0.5-1 ml/kg body weight (5-10 mg/kg) daily for 7 days.
Cattle: 0.5-1 ml/kg body weight (5-10 mg/kg) daily until recovery.
Dog: For dermatophytosis 0.5 ml/kg body weight (5 mg/kg) orally daily until
mycological cure.
For systemic mycoses administer 0.5-1 ml/kg body weight (5-10 mg/kg) daily orally
for 60 days.
Cat: 0.5 ml/ kg body weight (5 mg/kg) once daily on alternating weeks for 3
treatment cycles.
Or as directed by the registered Veterinary Physician.
Contraindication
Itraconazole should not be used in animals that are allergic to it or similar
antifungals.
Warning & Precaution
Itraconazole has been associated with renal changes. So it should be used with
caution with renal dysfunction.
Itraconazole is metabolized by the liver and can cause elevated liver enzymes. So it
should be used with caution in case of impaied liver function.
Side Effects
Common: Emesis, anorexia and weight loss have commonly been observed in
treated birds/animals.
Rare: Not known
Use in Pregnancy, lactation & Lay
Itraconazole should not use in birds in lay and within 4 weeks before the onset of the
laying period.
Laboratory studies in rats have shown evidence of dose-related teratogenic,
foetotoxic and maternotoxic effects at high dosage (40 and 160 mg/kg administered
daily for 10 days during their gestational period.
Drug Intetection
With Medicine: Concurrent use of chloramphenicol, ivermectin or methylprednisolone
can inhibits the metabolism of itraconazole.The concomitant use of erythromycin can
result in an increased plasma concentration of itraconazole. Itraconazole used
concomitantly with amphotericin B may be antagonistic against Aspergillus spp. or
Candida spp.
With food & others: Not known
Overdose
Itraconazole generally has a narrow margin of safety in birds.
Withdrawl Period
Meat, Milk & Egg: Not known.
Storage
Store below 25°C temperature, protected from light and in a dry place. Keep all
medicines out of reach of children.
